The increasing number of users with multiple mobile devices underscores the importance of understanding how users interact, often simultaneously, with these multiple devices. However, most device based monitoring studies have focused only on a single device type. In contrast, we study the multidevice usage of a US-based panel through device based monitoring on panelist's smartphone and tablet devices. We present a broad range of results from characterizing individual multidevice sessions to estimating device usage substitution. For example, we find that for panelists, 50% of all device interaction time can be considered multidevice usage. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mobile device use has been soaring in recent years in all user groups. Mobile learning is no longer an optional activity for academic institutions, but a necessary endeavor. Developing a curriculum around mobile learning is essential, particularly for distance-based, non-traditional students. Understanding how students use their mobile devices is important to supporting mobile learning initiatives. Student survey responses were examined to determine how students use mobile devices in education. Librarians must stay on the forefront of mobile technology by using their skills in curating and teaching to support this important educational initiative and to become leaders in this area.

With the rapid growth of the mobile devices and the emergence of cloud computing, mobile cloud computing has gained widespread interest. In mobile cloud computing, a large-scale collection of mobile devices cooperate with each other to provide a cloud service at the edge. However, the improper mobile device selection has a negative effect on the quality of service. Existing methods are difficult to solve the problem, because they do not take the status and the historical characteristics of the mobile devices into consideration. This paper introduces a device status-aware and stability-aware mobile device selection method. Firstly, a model is designed to store the status and the historical characteristics of each mobile device. Secondly, an optimized cloud model is employed to evaluate the stability of each mobile device. Lastly, an optimal mobile device searching algorithm is presented to select the optimal mobile device. We provide an extensive evaluation of our method. The results show that our method can increase the quality of mobile cloud service compared with the traditional method.

Few studies have looked at the interactions between these two channels of digital communication. While most prior research has been based upon surveys of attitudes toward and intentions to use a technology (and lack a final link to actual usage), in this study, the extent of actual home Internet use, mobile device use, and the simultaneity between these modes of usage are examined. We find that, overall, mobile device use is enhanced by home Internet use, while the two act as substitutes in the case of advanced and sensitive applications.

This paper presents a utility-based approach for utilising services of mobile devices in mobile grid. This paper proposes a computational model for the calculation of utilities of the negotiating service agents and user agents in mobile grid system. The proposed model uses multiple attribute (energy consumption and resource utilisation) in the utility function. The goal is the maximisation of utility for the mobile grid system. To reduce the computational complexity, the global optimisation is decomposed into subproblems at two levels. Furthermore, the paper presents a utility-based algorithm lor optimally exploiting mobile devices to support mobile services in mobile grid. Finally, the paper illustrates the effectiveness and performance through a set of simulations and evaluations.

This paper proposes an SAMD (Synchronization Algorithms based on Message Digest) algorithm based on message digest in order to facilitate data synchronization between a server-side database and a mobile database. The SAMD algorithm makes the images at the server-side database and the mobile database uses message digest tables to compare two images in order to select the rows needed for synchronization. If the two images are different, the synchronization progresses according to synchronization policy. The SAMD algorithm does not use techniques that are dependent on specific database venders; neither does it use triggers, stored procedures or timestamps. The SAMD uses only the standard SQL functions for the synchronization. Therefore the SAMD algorithm can be used in any combinations of server-side database and mobile database because of its independence of database vender. This feature is important in order to build efficient mobile business systems because the upcoming mobile business environment has heterogeneous characteristics in which diverse mobile devices, mobile databases, and RDBMS exist.

Purpose of review: There is an increasing importance of incorporating mobile computing into the academic medical environment. A growing majority of physicians, residents and medical students currently use mobile devices for education, access to clinical information and to facilitate bedside care. Therefore, it is important to assess the current opportunities and challenges in the use of mobile computing devices in the academic medical environment. Recent findings: Current research has found that a majority of physicians, residents and medical students either own or use mobile devices. In addition, studies have shown that these devices are effective as educational tools, resource guides and aids in patient care. Although there are opportunities for medical education, issues of deployment must still be addressed, such as privacy, connectivity, standardization and professionalism. Summary: Understanding the opportunities and challenges of using mobile computing devices in the academic medical environment can help determine the feasibility and benefits of their use for individuals and institutions.
